TSM Experiment
While having the rear assembly off of an 08 Deluxe, a couple bro's and I decided to perform an experiment. We always wondered what would happen if the Turn Signal Module TSM failed while one the road, how would the bike react. Would the system go into "Limp Mode" and allow you to get home. The answer is No.
(1) We unplugged the TSM.
(2) Turned the ignition switch to the "On" position. The ECM went through its diagnostic mode and displayed a warning indicator light on the speedometer. This was expected.
(3) Switched the run/stop handlebar switch to the Run position. No change to the speedometer warning light. Expected.
(4) Engaged the start switch. Nothing. The starter would not engage and the bike would not turn over.
Summery: If the TSM completely malfunctions and the ECM does not receive the proper signal from it, the bike will not run.
Another item I'll carry a spare of on long trips.
