Default Speedo Problems

The speedometer/odometer isn't working on my bike. I bought a new one and it still doesn't work. This is my first bike so, I don't really know where to start. Is there anything else that could cause this? I know the sensor could be at fault but how do I prove that? Is there an onboard control module that this goes through? I'm tired of paying a dealer to look at it. Any help would be appreciated!

Yep, Sensor. A lot cheeper than a new speedo. Do your blinkers turn off? Did you disconnect the battery to reset? Good luck. We are talking about an electronic speedo?

If its the speed sensor, you should also be experiencing a stalling condition after decel, and the turn sigs will most likely not self cancel. Speed sensor is about $60 and most dealers stock them. The bitch is installing it. The connector is behind the oil bag in front of the splash guard favoring the right side of the bike. Splash guard needs to be moved out of the way to access it, and even then it's a bit tight with the wheel in place. Other than that, it's one bolt and a 3 pin connector. Might want to pull it first, check to see if its buggered up with debris. It's just a magnet that senses the passing cogs on the 4th gear in the tranny and the ECM converts the frequency to a speed. Good luck!

on the right side above the transmission is the speedometer sending unit from the transmission. I had the same problem, my speedo was acting funny. Take the sensor out of the top of the tranny and clean it. Was told by the local HD dealer and their top dog mechanic that small bits of shavings adhere to the magnetic part of the sensor and sends all kinds of crazy things to the computer. Cleaned mine and it solved the problem

Fortunately enough, I picked up the speedo on Ebay for $100. I don't have the stalling condition but, my signals don't self cancel. I have to turn them off. I thought that was normal though. I'll check this out this weekend and report my findings. Thanks guys!

Some information about the bike would help.

With a carbed bike you wouldn't experience the stalling condition, but the self canceling directionals would be affected.

It's probably the speed sensor. Located down by the top of the transmission

I am thinking TSSM for signals. Try cleaning teh speed sensor on the tranny off. It can get metal shavings stuck to it that can affect it working properly.

I found, what I think to be, the speed sensor. I can't comfirm until my manual comes in but, it was right on the front of the tranny, more on the left side. It's really easy to get to on my bike, if I had the right thing. It was clean though. Once I can confirm I have the right piece, I'll suspect the sensor to be faulty.
