I found a Cross Bones seat and will be picking that up on Sunday. I think it will look fine with the Deluxe passenger pillion now that I can see it with the Driver seat off.
You'll find the stock Crossbones seat will sit you very high up compared to the Deluxe seat, which will change your center of gravity a bit. As I mentioned previously, the 1925 tractor style seat has a lot less padding so it sits you quite a bit lower. Surprisingly, the one with less padding was also more comfortable than the padded one, and keeps you in the right part of the saddle a lot better. You'll probably find with the crossbones seat that you'll be sliding back out of the sweet spot on the seat on accelleration quite a bit. The one with less padding is nice and wide for support but keeps you in the bucket of the seat instead of sliding around all the time. My advice would be to put the Crossbones seat on eBay and get the 1925 seat, but obviously you'll do what works for you, as you should.
This is the one I'm referring to, there's another version with a skirt and a chrome accent on it, but I like the look of the one that lets you see the springs underneath. Sorry if it links to the Canada site, I just pulled it up on the first HD site my browser came up on.
Seriously go on EBay and get a Hertage seat. I went through that trying to rebuild the seat crap. I got a heritage seat changed the bars and never looked back.
I got the CrossBones seat and got it mounted. It actually looks good IMHO with the Deluxe passenger pillion. The seam in the middle of the CrossBones seat at the back matches the seam in the passenger pillion. The side stitching is kinda similar to the stitching on the tank bib.
It is definitely a different riding position - higher which is good for my longer legs. I went for a short ride last night and it feels different and will take some getting used to. When you lean into a corner and set the suspension, the seat is still moving around. It feels comfortable but with only 40 miles, I guess time will tell!
Depends what look you want, I've got 4 different seats .
C&C solo for the Socal look,
Heritage, dont like it cos of the rivets
Heritage Springer with rail and pad, for when I'm all bagged up
Fatboy seat, foams been shaved and recovered in Ostrich,
You need to work out what you want from it, Std deluxe seats are useless if your over 5,10''
I had the exact exact same problem (I'm 6'1") and did tons of research and evaluation and here's what I decided on......and I love it!
I went with the Heritage Springer seat, it pushes you back at least 2-3 inches, it has an even better rail than the stock Deluxe seat. I then shaved the stock pillion slightly on the front and it slides up under the Springer seat perfectly. It is definitely a tough seat to find as it was discontinued several years ago but e-bay usually has one from time to time.
I am also running the Heritage Springer bags and IMHO they look great on a Deluxe and obviously match the seat perfectly. I couldn't be happier with the decision.
Just ran across this post. This is exactly what I want to do on my 06 Deluxe. Did you have any issues installing the mounting kit? I’m not seeing how the front pivot mount will attach.
