First problem on my Breakout
Mine makes the same noise after it's been sitting for a while. After it does it the first time, it's good to go until it sits for a while again.
For giggles, I just went out to the garage and tested it. Sure enough ... the first "pressurizing" it sounded just like yours, then the next five times, it was just the quiet whistle.
Never thought about it being a problem until you raised it here.

Shall we say "Recall" sounds like a defective batch of fuel pumps. Possible loose motor bearings or mis adjusted end play. Once everything warms up and tightens up no more noise but once it cools down they loosen up again. My

Last year I did look into the NJ lemon law for my sportbike. My bike would have to be at the dealership 3 times for the same problem, then, I need to send a certified letter to the manufacturer, give them another chance to fix it. Or, 20 total days at the shop for the same issue. If it is a "major" safety defect, it has to be resolved on the first try. I'm not looking for anything more than to get my bike fixed. I'm glad that their is another bike at the dealership that has the same issue. At least I'm not alone.
I hope there will be a recall. I wonder if it's the fuel pressure regulator? I'm not sure if it comes with the fuel pump. I'm sure there are more people out there who is having the same issue. I wish they would come forward. Since the grinding noise in the fuel tank does go away after the bike cools down, I bet many people will think nothing of it. In fact, according to the dealer, it is not normal. I'm going to add a new topic with a video on this forum and just ask if anyone is having the same issue on their Softails. The title of the topic should just read "Loud noise in Fuel tank while pump is priming"
I've been waiting patiently to see if it happens on mine, and sure enough, I stopped for a pack of smokes on a ride this evening, and it made the same noise. Odd thing is though, I turned it off and back on again, and it made the normal fuel pump noise. Got home, tried it again, and same - back to normal. Have to wait and see if it does it again. (I'm sure it will, at this point)
i know the noise you are talking about. mine fatboy developed that same problem a few months after purchasing the bike. dealer said it was common and not to worry about it. i was told it was because the pump had bled down and was repriming. once in awhile it buzzes and once in awhile it purrs like it should. not sure yet if i want to take it someplace else to have a second opinion or not.
Wow, just the thread I have been looking for. My Breakout is doing the same thing but not quite as extreme yet. About 2 weeks ago I noticed that every time I turned the ignition switch to the run position, there was a very loud almost whistle like noise during the fuel injection process. Then when I ride it for a little while and then try it again it sounds fine. I hope that someone on here can make us all aware of the actual solution to this problem so we don't have to leave all our bikes at the shop for months! I just really hope the problem is found before my bike starts making the grinding noise. Please somebody find a solution!
I hate to say this but my Breakout is back at the dealer for the pump noise. The service manager insist that this noise is not normal. I made a recording of the pump noise just before I rode it to the dealer. I let the service manager hear the noise that I recorded. I left for a family vacation so the dealer will have my bike for another week. Hopefully the dealer will figure it out. As I said the grinding fuel pump noise can only be heard when the bike is cold.
