I would be curious as to what the output pressure of the pump is, sounds like it is working too hard, if the pressure regulator is not working properly the pump will make abnormal sounds, it is an automotive style system, usually when you have a bad pump it sounds like it is grinding glass.

My Slim 2013 has done it since day one. After a few hours, days, overnight, it will make that same grinding noise. More on colder morning. I would say almost everytime my bike has been seating for 2 or 3 days.
If I ride everyday, It probably won't make it.
I am not too worried about it (even though I would like to have only the nice buzzing sound!).
The bike has 3700 miles and runs very smooth and strong.
I wanted to avoid what you went through. If it were to fail, within the warranty period, I'll take to the dealer. It it fails after, I'll buy one and replace it. No need for added stress!
Good luck with your dealer.

The added stress does suck. But it's more annoying knowing that the first thousand miles, everything was ok and I'm left with this. I will get to the bottom of this. I am now confident that this grinding noise is not coming from the fuel pump. The fuel pump is located in the left front lower area f the fuel tank. The noise is coming from the upper center tank area where the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter are located. I have a strong feeling the noise is coming from a fuel pressure regulator with a faulty spring that is vibrating causing this noise. I have ordered a fuel pressure regulator but our damm post office is taking their dear time to get it to me.

I've had my breakout for 3 months, and I'm getting my second fuel pump replaced. My bike has been in the shop for 3 weeks in the 3 months I've owned it.

The fuel pump on my Breakout used to make a high pitch sound when it was priming. The bike runs fine though. I drove it around for a few minutes but I can't hear the pump over the running engine. Once I got home, I turned the switch on, and the fuel pump was grinding. Sounds like she's sick. I'm impatient because the weather was finally nice so my wife and I went on a 200 mile run. After about 2 hours or so of riding, turn the ignition on and the fuel pump sounded fine. Normal priming noise. Thought all was ok. I even stopped a couple of times on our ride just to check for any pump noise and all was still ok. I got home, shut the engine off. I let the bike sit for a couple of hours, and still the pump was quiet. However, this morning after the bike sat overnight in my garage, I turned the ignition switch back on, and wow, the fuel pump is grinding away. That sux. It's kinda weird how the fuel pump primes fine when the engine is hot and its so awful once the bike gets cold. I know what's going to happen when I take it to the dealer. I'm going to ride the bike there and the fuel pump is not going to make any unusual noise because the bike will be hot. Get it home, sit over night and crap, it will sound awful again. Is this bike going to break on me? Looks like I will have to take it to the dealer and leave it there overnight so they can try it in the morning. Oh, the noise in positively in the gas tank because I placed my hand under the tank, and that's where the noise is coming from. Fuel tank level doesn't seem to have an affect on it. The pump made that grinding noise either way and anytime the bike sat around for a while, like over night. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

thanks

I agree with this. I imagine the fuel pump was never actually replaced the first time around. Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator could be the culprit anyway.
