The 07 and up have a 200mm rear tire vs the 06 has a 150mm rear tire. You will get some compression increase, by changing the head gasket. The gaskets are cheap and you never have to worry about the locking nuts coming loose. You can also upgrade the breathers while you are in there. Pulling the tank and heads is maybe a 30 minute job.
Good thing about an 06 is the heads flow much better than previous models.

200mm rear tire? Man I got lots to learn sometimes you just gotta jump into the water and start swimming though or you will never get in and be sitting on the side while the other guys get the hot blonde

WOW that is a ginormous tire width increase.. not sure why you dont like the extra meat from a cosmetic standpoint.. on the other hand.. I have not seen both back to back.. but usually wider tires look "cooler".. ok off to bed to dream of harleys that hard decisions tomorrow

Parting words.. dont like the paint... but... could be solved.. I've sprayed before and done quite well actually.... gotta check into harley logos though.. Im not spending $1000 on a $9000 bike.. paint would cost me about $200.

I think I could solve the 80 mph issue with an over drive gear.. maybe Im wrong about that.. we do have some 70 mph and 75 out my way...

chain tensioners.. bah.. no problem.. a fun winter project where I can bond with my bike... besides.. I dont need to worry about them until I hit 20k miles.

the fatter rear tire.. hmmm might be worth another $2k jk

Oh and I didnt know heads were 30 minutes.. Id go that route then... nice..
thanks guys

I think a fatboy should flow from front to back, to me it looks awesome on a dyna, but wrong on a Fatboy. the tranny gear set has to be replaced with some grinding on the the oem case, you can just add a gear.
a good gearset is 1k-2k. I should be in bed too, but my daughters plane is delayed to midnight.

I have an 06 that I have owned since new. I think it is a vary good year. They do offer carb, but was last year and hard to find one with it. I also like the 150 rear better. The 200 just does not flow well in my eyes. The 200 also wears quicker from the reviews I have read on here. I have just shy of 50k on mine and did the cam conversion with cams, big bore, lifters etc. When I changed them out at 20k they still looked great and was not needed but I had pre purchased all the parts so I did the swap. I do at least one 3k plus trip a year and have never had an issue with the 5 speed. Would overdrive be nice on the trips out west going through the plains yes, but not worth the price in my mind. I have a good tune and only drop a few mpg's. Plus at those speeds once I need gas a break is usually in order to rehydrate and get some food and other things. I would say that is a good price, most in this area still go for 10k plus. Even more with the 110 coming up, dealerships and private parties want crazy money for used right now. Good luck

Thanks for the advice... Im waiting for funds to be xfered to my account from a sale of a car.. if it happens it happens.. if not, well, then not.. LOTS of bikes out there... I am trying to figure out how to get it home though.. no license yet in my state... horse before cart I guess.. but its just a written exam.. no biggie..

I noticed you can buy a 6 speed conversion using stock cover for $780ish... not bad... but you need to add a few things.. still though... bearings shouldnt be too bad..

I've learned a lot.. so if another bike is in my future you guys have helped me a ton... I know what to look for a little better now.. and the owner also gave me some great advice about looking bikes over.. he pointed out to look for OEM clamps for example on fuel hoses.. tells you if the tank was off, which tells you someone dove into the motor more than likely.. little stuff like that.

I think if I do this one, I'll buy tank and fenders, paint, and shelve the original pieces.. 50 zillion of these bikes out there but 20 yrs from now someone will thank me.

Lots of good info and you are moving along in the learning curve quickly.

06 did have injector issues and are upgraded from 8 degree to 25 degree.

6 speed trans is a "nice" thing to have. Not a deal breaker. In fact, for the riding I do, hills and sierra, mountains, I avoid freeways and highways, its less then a nice thing to have. Also, I so dont go over 72mph often due to making more them my share of contributions to the CHP and insurance companies.

96" stock/stage 1 is no better performing then a stock/stage1 88". Its when you cam the 96" that you have more noticeable tq/hp gains.

Cam tensioners are not a big deal either. Check tensioners and you can replace them yourself if you have a manual and some skills.

The thing is, when you combine all of three, it becomes a much nicer package.

Dont like two tone? lol I did not like mine either and was going to paint it also. Lots of black and red bikes. Dont see many two tone so it grew on me as I prefer not to be a sheep...

Definitely check out the fenders on 07+ and 06 Fatboys. The longer sleeker fender is classic! And adding 4.25" rim on the rear with a 160 mm tire fills the rear fender up nicely.

Lots of bikes for sale, Buyers market. If you are not sure, sleep on it. The odds of it selling quickly are small... Then again, you will probably have a little bit of cold feet no matter what bike you buy. At least I am like that with all large purchases.
