im doing my cams and putting a se hydro plate on my 06 standard. ive watched all the videos and searched all over and i think i have a good grasp on how to do the job. my only question is every video shows them spinning the rear wheel to get the oil pump in the sweet spot. how do you know it has gotten into the sweet spot?
spinning the wheels just centers the pump. your not finding a sweet spot. I used the pins and spun the wheel to make sure it was centered. You will not feel or hear anything. did you replace the inner bearings at the same time?
Take your spark plugs out, put the bike in 5th gear, place a long skinny screwdriver in one of your plug holes, when you rotate the rear tire the screwdriver will go up and down. Rotate it until the screwdriver is at it's highest point before it starts going back down again, then tighten down the oil pump. It's easier with an extra person.

What does TDC piston position have to do with centering the oil pump?

+1 - '06 SG with 32k inner cam bearings went and took out everything - now I got a 103"
with welded up cases. Just glad it didn't happen on a road trip.
Centering the oil pump is imperative! I know a guy who bypassed this step and ended up with Zero oil pressure at start up. There are centering bolts sold as tools but the "wheel spin method" works as well. Spin the wheel 4 or 5 rotations prior to torquing down the bolts. Additionally: (1) Insure that you replace the Oil Pump Suction side "O" Ring. (2) Seat the inner cam bearings with the stamped numbers on the bearings facing out. (3) Each Lifter has a small passage hole on one side of it. These holes must face out. Take your time and use lots of assembly lube.
I've performed several of these up-grades. If you have any questions, shoot me a mail at olongapo2@gmail.com
