Can some one please help me. I am fairly new to HD. Last year I purchased an 05 Softail Springer. I usually let the shop do all my maintenance on my old Honda but I was feeling a little frisky and decided to change the fluid in my bike on my own. I was wondering what this plug goes to.
I took this plug out thinking it was the drain for the primary case. (I know, stupid) Anyway, a small amount of oil came out, I replaced the plug but was not sure where this gets refilled or if the engine oil will make it there. Help, Please!
Sump drain plug. It is pipe thread. Dont remove it, some people run into cracking the engine cases removing or installing it.
Its used to check for sumping, if there is an oil pump or valve problem.
Get a manual, most stuff on your bike is very easy to do and can save you a lot of $, but one uninformed mistake like removing and replaceing the pipe plug, overtightening it and cracking the crankcase will cost you hundreds or thousands.
The drain plus is on the frame. Follow the hose out of teh bottom of the oil tank. You are far from teh first to do this. Manual is well worth it's weight in gold.
