Before you go fillin' and drillin' you may consider the following. Measure your new seat height. How does it compare to the original. If its much higher, there may indeed be a problem with the fender's alignment. If not, your fender may be properly fitted.

You got to have a coupleor more inches clearance for tire travel. This may show up as excessive on your build because the fender is relatively short. I did the RC Components build with a full fender (strutless) and ended up lowering the bike with the HD lowering bolts. Looks alot better that way.

I was thinking that, too. I'm not sure if the lowering kit would even bring it down enough. It just seems REALLY high compared to photos of other bikes with the same kit. Our idea for tonight was to cut some foam blocks and put on the tire to allow several inches of clearance and then see how the fender fit. If it looks a little more like what I've seen in photos and still gives ample clearance, that's when I might re-fit it. I'll keep this thread updated.

There is about 3" shock travel on a Softail that isn't lowered, so that gives you an indication of what you should have.

Okay, so last night I cut 3.5" strips of foam and taped them along the tire. I set the fender on the foam and lined it all up. It still looks higher than in online photos, but then I got an idea. I looked at the photos fatboy2five0 has in his gallery of his build process. It looks like his fender is set about the same as mine. He mentioned that he put in a lowering kit and his final product looks more in line with what I've seen elsewhere. So I think this placement will work. The good news is that the struts hide all but one of my original drill holes so it's not a horrible fix-up job.

What do you guys think? Does this fender placement look totally stupid or should I go with it? I think I can live with this.

DickGrayson you may want to see what it looks like off the jack with your weight on it before you call this permanent. If you plan to recessthe ECM box into the fender, you'll need to allow for room from the tire. Will you fill the gap between the front of the fender and the splash shield? Probably don't want to be spraying water up into your electronics.

What taillight / license gear are you going to use? Thanks for keeping us all updated on the build - almost like being there. Look forward to the 1st ride!

Yeah, I think I'm going to tape it up good to the struts and then lower it to see how it sits. The fender is cut around the ECM box so the under-seat area protects the electronics pretty well. It's just about like the stock fender in the notched area. I had it lowered off the lift last night and it didn't really settle all that much more. As it is in those photos, the tires are still touching the ground, it's just lifted enough to balance the bike upright off of the jiffy stand (I can't slide that cardboard seen under the tire).

The good news is that I was looking at it today on my lunch break and I realized that I can mount my new rear bullet LED signal lights into the two rear holes from the previous drilling so I don't have to worry about filling them. I'm going to install a module to use my LEDs as Run/Turn/Brake and go with a simple non-lighted sidemount license plate holder.
