I was thinking about this tool without even scrolling to the second post. And wallah, there it is lol
Couldnt you have just cracked the oil drain just enough until the amount you needed came out...Instead of sticking something in there...?

Op, for future needs you can get yourself one of these.
It's a manual siphon tool with a 3/8 hose attached, less chance of dropping things inside the oil tank
I've used them on almost everything including oil, gas, antifreeze etc.
Just remember to flush and clean after each use.
Anyway, I've had them for years in my garage. I believe I got the
metal one from an auto parts store.

I was forced to come up with something to do the same job on an ATV I used to have when I wanted to change out the front differential oil and couldn't get the drain plug out.
So I made a vacuum rig using and old plastic jar and some hose - worked like a charm...
