Default Carburetor Tuning - Help!!!

I have a 2001 Fatboy and just installed some new Python sideshot slipons. I originally had the stock pipes with the baffles punched out. I was told that a correctly tuned carburetor would result in spark plugs being a "poopy" brown color. I have attached a picture of my spark plugs after changing out the pilot jet only to one size bigger. So far I have discovered that doing nothing gives me a lean mixture. Changing out main jet and/or pilot jet individually seems to give me a too rich mixture. Any suggestions? Looking at the spark plugs, am I even close? Help!!!!!

I would put a #48 pilot jet and a sportster needle. Be sure to take out the adjusting plug so you can get it right.

+1 on the #48...then just tune with the air/fuel screw. If its too lean you'll def know...fart fart

If you want to tune a carb by "reading" your plugs, you have to do a plug chop. Google it or use Youtube if you don't know what that is. Contrary to what others have said, on a stock engine regardless of what exhaust you have, 45 is the biggest you want to go on the pilot, 185 on the main. Then adjust the a/f mix screw to get to the optimal tune. You can get a real good tune by using the seat-of-the-pants dyno while you evaluate any hesitation or carb farts and making adjustments to the a/f screw. If you want to get more technical than that, go see a tuner who has a sniffer that gets inserted into the exhaust to check your exact air to fuel mix through the RPM range.
