What windshield do you have....HD or another brand???? Looking at getting one eventually but can do without the 'wobble' factor. I cruise 75 on average and have no problems with any wobble at all.......my Nighttrain would wobble at low speeds but that would disappear after you brought the speed up....and this was more than likely do to the fact that I got a bit personal with the rear bumper of an old lady's car early on....to the tune of about $7k......everything new on the front from the tank forward......but I was never convinced that the frame had not been tweaked a bit........had the Custom out last weekend and was up over 115mph and felt no problems whatsoever........
Well I got out there today for a test without the windshield. However, the wind was blowing abou 10-12 and gusting to about 17 and at 75 MPH you really feel the wind. The wind was not on my nose but about 30 degrees to the left. I did not notice my handlebars rocking as before when behind an 18 wheeler, however, not being used to the wind at those speeds made it uncomfortable. Your arms and torso are feeling the pull and push of the wind that the windshield was keeping off you. So if you can get used to running without a windsheild then I would have to say it was an improvement over the wobble. However, for long trips it seems you would really get beat down without a windshield on the Interstate. I believe I can get used to the wobble, especially if I am expecting it. This might be a design of form over function. I believe the Custom is a sexy bike for looks, but might not be as stable some of the other bikes like the Fatboy. I have to say that for some of the Saturday morning rides we have been doing on backroad where you don't get over about 60-65, I like running without the windshield.
hahaha lol did you say looks sexy[sm=laughat.gif]wut the heck it have lace or fish net seat on it
What we are talking about is wobble created by the draft of an 18 Wheeler on the Interstate. The wind is catching the windshield making it act like a wing or something. I have had my bike up to 100 with no wobble at all.
Thanks for the update Techdct. I have yet to get to test mine without the windshield, but it does sound like thats where the problem lies. I too have an HD windshield, not sure the model but it 's the quick release one.
Yesterday afternoon, with the windshield, no wind blowing, ran it on I-40 and got the slight wobble behind the big rigs starting at about 70. After I cleared all the traffic, ran it up to over 90 with very little if any wobble noticable.
Today, no windshield, 5 - 8 mph winds, no wobble at any speed, trucks or no trucks, all the way to 90.
It's the windshield. But I've got to have it for the long runs, so I'll just have to deal with the wobble factor
I've not experienced any "wobble" either with or without the windshield. I have an HD quick release windshield and for long trips I can't see riding without it.
I have done a few trips with the windshield on and like you say when in among traffic and 18 wheelersI have had a bit of a wobble. Not too bad. I also have a little wobble when decellerating through I would say 40 mph down to about 20-25 with and without windshield. If you release pressure on the grips when stopping the bars want to wobble some. Tire pressures are right on, and spokes are all tight. Could it be head bearings?
