just traded my 2008 Nightster in for a 2002 fat Boy.has 14000 miles.in beautiful condition. went for a ride this past saturday and forgot to turn the gas on. she died within a quarter mile. i turned the gas on and gave the throttle a couplr turns to get gas in to the carb and now she runs like ****!!!!!! she is only running on 1 cylinder and smells like gas. called the Stealership where i bought it from and they said it should have fired right back up.they said it sounds like some sediment got in to the carb.im no Harley mechanic but even i dont believe this.could it be a coil? she sounds so bad. loss of power. smell of gas. any help would be appreciated as i really love this bike.
I think it is junk in the carb as when you run out of gas whatever sediment is in the tank will get sucked into the carb. You are smelling gas as half of it is not getting burned since one cylinder is not firing.
Pull the plug on the cylinder that is not firing and check it's condition. Could have fried the plug with a lean burn condition since it ran out of gas to that cylinder.
Check for spark from the bad cylinder's plug, make sure their is NO gas fumes or liquid around when you check the spark on the plug
Update; Harley said it was the coil and they fixed it for free since the bike was purchased 2 days before it broke down. they also said the 15,000 mile checkup was done.what do they do for the 15,000 mile check up? i have a service manual on order .also, what do they check on the 20,000 mile?
There'll be a full list of everything to be done at the service intervals in your new service manual.
P.S. Be thankful your dealer took care of you, most would have told you to pound sand on a 12 year old bike.
I can't believe you went from 08 to 02. You lost a lot of good stuff in that roll back. I went from 08 to 06, and when I lost the 6 speed trans and went back to a 88" I knew right away I effed up. I rode one summer and got a 07 with that stuff back. Hope it all works out.
