But they should get a chance to fix it, and get it on record that there is a problem.
That way if it recurs later on even if its out of warranty they may still be liable for any repairs or parts that may be needed.

If it really does turn out to be the problem I would take the tape off and carefully inspect the wires.
Odds are that one or two may have the insulation spit or broken through.
In that case a little liquid tape or even nail polish should give it a little bit more protection than the tape from water getting in to corrode the wires.
Believe me, if you think things got a bit strange from a pinched wire.
You ain't seen nothin until you see what kind of strange if not outright bizarre things a corroded wire can do to a circuit.
Not to mention trying to find the bad wire even if you KNOW its the problem is a real SOB.
After you paint the wires, out the tape back on and bundle it with a zip tie or two in where it can't be squashed again and you should be good for a long time.
