for the second time this week my 08 Heritage had a "red key light " come on and a " Buss. Er". code appeared ,then all gauges lit up ,then all was well again.
I think I have original battery still. I have just replaced seat and grips nothing electrical. I have 13000 miles on it!
Can someone please narrow this down for me.
thx
GR
That is a security alert. Typically it has nothing to do with security but a low battery or loose wires. I noticed that when my battery was weak every time I started it the light would come on for a second or two and then go out.

Check for engine codes it should store something.
Thanks !I charge my battery almost each day but I will check wiring . I do not have a manual. Where can I download one ?

If that's the original battery then you're probably due for a new one after 5 years.
AFAIK you can't DL a manual - at least not legally.
I paid $65 for mine at the dealer... and it's worth every penny.
That was my first purchase along with a swing-arm bag, before they even rolled it out to the parking lot and put the plates on.
It's already saved me 10x that amount in DIY work...
I broke the neutral safety switch on clutch lever while changing grips. See if you can start your bike in gear with clutch in. My key light stays on all the time. No problem, just can't start in gear.

Bike starts in gear .
Thx for reply.
Battery wires all good . No date on battery ,looks in good shape but former owner thought it was original.
Maybe time for new one !
Thx
If you have a vole meter handy or can get one.
Check the voltage at the battery terminals.
With a good battery you should see around 13+VDC.
If the lights came on when you started it and it was idling odds are the voltage is dropping below 12.5VDC to 13VDC until the alternator starts putting out more juice.
The bikes electronics do not take well to low voltages and will do strange things when that happens.
If it is dropping down that low its time for a new battery.

thanks for input.
They lights have only been coming on after approx. 15 minutes on the road. Today I went for a 20 minute scoot and no gauges or red key appeared at all.
I will test battery tomorrow with voltage meter.
thx again.
If its taking that long for the light to come on you may have another issue either adding to or causing an unintentional battery problem.
I would still check the charging to make sure its working properly.
But keep the meter handy and the next time the light comes on, recheck it to see if things have changed.
My guess is that you may find its not putting out the right voltage out either because it has a poor connection to the regulator or its going bad on you.
It might also be a bad connection to the alternator circuit causing it not to charge once its been vibrated a while or it gets hot.
Good Luck and let us know what you eventually find out.
Might help out the next poor SOB who's ripping his hair out trying to figure it out.
