Default LED Fuel Cap Question

Hello,

Probably a simple answer (hopefully) to a relatively simple question. I have a 2004 Heritage Softail and I want to replace the stock fuel gauge with an LED one.

The wiring that is under the gas tank is attached via a connector in a clip to the frame. Its a tight space under there, but I was wondering if the wires are connected together with an 'easy clip' Meaning one that has a little button that releases them?? The connector seemed a little more complicated. Also, the clip that attaches to the bike housing..is that something that can be pulled apart to release the wires?? I didn't want to yank on it and have it break.

I appreciate the help..

Thanks!

A small eyeglass screwdriver will release the barb on the wire from the plastic connector. Google something similar. There are plenty of how to videos out there. Really simple procedure.

Appreciate the reply, maybe I didn't explain. I understand how to get it released from the plastic connector (thanks to Google).. What I meant is, is it quick release on the bike?? Meaning when the plastic connector is connected to the bike ..its pretty tight up there and I can't see if that is a quick release or not (I didn't want to yank on the wire) and if the wire holder is able to be pryed open to pull the wires out of it.
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum from Colorado!
If you're talking about the loom wrap or ring that holds the wire to the frame, then yes it is a clamshell type that you have to kind of pinch to get it to release. Then you'll need a tool to release the wires from the connector at the end of the gauge wires that go through the tank. Let us know how it goes, I'm going to do this myself eventually.

not to hijack this thread, but since the topic is the LED gas gauge; I have the one that has I believe 6 LEDs on it and frankly other than the pretty colors the gauge is crap. All the LEDs go out when there's still around 2 gallons left in the tank.

Are these gauges just that inaccurate or is there a calibration that can be done?

I have the Speedo/Tac so I use the fuel gauge on it and it's pretty accurate so my LED gauge is really only used for cosmetic purposes, but I wish it was more accurate.

That is the one part I was talking about .. Thank you! Once you get it from the frame is just connected via a quick connect??

Thanks again...

I have the LED Willie G skull fuel gauge on mine and it's pretty much spot on with my tach/speedo combo. The digital fuel gauge on the speedo vs the LED is literally one for one. I lose one bar on the speedo gauge when I lose one light on the LED gauge.

I just took my tank off to do top end engine work and never went any farther with it. If all you're doing is swapping to the flush mount gas caps, I'm not sure you need to go farther, so I'm a little confused.
