Default EFI Changes necessary with air cleaner and pipes?

I changed my stock Harley exhaust last year but didn't change the air cleaner. Now I've got a free flowing air cleaner. Is it safe to install it without having the bike tuned by the dealer? Is there a chance of hurting the engine from running too lean? What is the minimum tuning necessary or recommended?

..at the very least a FuelMoto Micro Tuner, a V&H FuelPak or the NightRider XiED/ViED's would be a start. A Stage 1 tune would be better...

If it's in you buget then I recommend a flash tuner. If not products like jam listed give good results, I'd go with the xied's or micro tuner over the fuel pack personally.

You don't state what year your ride is, that would help us help you. Above suggestions are all good, I would add that at least a tuner from FuelMoto would be in order. Call Jamie there and he will get you set-up.

Here's my post regarding your same issue
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/softa...-1-review.html

If you don't plan on any other mods, then you'll be happy with the Stage 1 download and yes, I found that the addition of a free flow cleaner really leaned it out and created some heat issues.

I'm also thinking about adding Vieds once I save up some cash

Default Thanks

Thanks everyone. I have a 2013 Softail Slim. I'm actually pretty happy with the performance of the stock machine. I'm not a drag racer, just a fast cruiser, but I can't resist at least giving it the ability to breathe freely.

JAM436 when you refer to a "stage I tune" what exactly do you mean? Some time on a dyno and the appropriate adjustments made there?

I'll check out all the suggestions you made. I'd love to be able to tinker for myself, but the tuners I've looked at like Power Commander and the auto tuners add up to a lot of money. I'll check out the ones you suggest.

He's talking about a one-deal flash where the dealer flashes your ECM for the a/c and pipes. I'm in the same boat as you...just wanted a little better performance and less heat. Just putting the slip-ons my bike ran very hot and lean (I have a 13 slim as well). After putting on the pc v and the stage one a/c my throttle response is better, no popping, and good gas mileage. The heat has dropped considerably too.

If you're a shade tree like myself the pc v is pretty nice. Fuel moto will load a map for you-then it is just plug and play. Also very easy to plug the unit into your laptop and make some small adjustments if you want to give that a go.

A lot of guys like to push for the higher end flash tuners with autotune but for me the pc v does the trick and saved me a couple hundred bones. If you were going to start getting a little more crazy with performance upgrades then maybe the higher end tuners.

It is my own opinion and the opinion of many others that it's initial tune, with any tuner or a stage 1 and up mod or upgrade that it should be done on a Dyno. That is my 1st bit of mods thats going to get done this winter since I changed my pipes. My thought process tells me why do anything to upgrade ones bike and not go all the way getting it dialed as well as a dyno can do and get the full benefits any upgrade addresses.
