Default @#$&)# Windshield!!

I don't especially like the looks of windshields on Harley's, and in all my years of riding I've never used one until I recently purchased my 2003 FatBoy.

It came with a quick disconnect windshield, and I've tried to like it, but............ It does a great job of keeping the head onwind from hitting my chest and head, but the wind coming from under it on each side of the gas tank is brutal..

I was looking at my neighbors RoadKing and saw that metal wind deflectors were mountedon the side of each tube, running to the bottom ofhis windshield. I assume this is to reduce the wind flow coming up from the bottomof the shield.

Arethere any 'trade secrets', or anyway totame this wind flow coming up from the bottom of the windshield and up the sidesof the tank without adding more hardware and clutter to the front of the bike?

If not I'mjust going to pull the windshield and continue to eat bugs. I'd prefer the head on wind of running no shield. At least that doesn't try to knock myriding glasses off and pull my tee shirt over my head.

I'd be interested too.

another problem I have is the helmet buffetting at high speeds. Feels like two guys slapping the sides of my helmet when riding. Lower speeds it is barely noticeable but still there. I removed the windshield. I have the full head on wind but absolutely NO buffeting.

Thanks!
Scott

I don't experience that at all with my windshield. The buffeting just isn't that severe, not nearly as bad aswithout thewindshield. Are you running the kingsize?

Cut it lower!

If you cut it so the wind is still in your face but not on your chest, you won't get buffeting.
Buy a scratched nasty one off ebay to test with if you aren't sure on the height.

On my previous bike I had one of those "mini" windshields and it was worthless. On my 07 Softail Custom I got the quick release windshield, especially for long trips. Tonight I pulled off the windshield and went for about an hour long ride and what a difference. Although the feeling of the wind pressing you back in the seat is awesome, the windshield really quieted down the wind noise and makes for a more comfortable ride. And of course, let's not forget all the little bugs that just love to hit you at 60MPH! Personally...I am "Pro-Windshield"!

The fork mounted wind deflectors work very well. I used to have them on my bike but got tired of looking at them. Also Jacks Flap Vest works. Try one. ifn you dont like it , send it back. He has add on this site.[8D]

I agree with Cowboy Harry, the "Jacks Flap Vest" actually works about 90%.
I haven't given it the " Hat Test" like he does on his web site,
but any time I think it's not worth it, I just pull the flaps down and all hell breaks loose around my head.

I emailed Jack and told him my height and weight and he sent me the perfect size vest. Size 44 for me.
It also is a very nice quality vest with lacing on the side to be worn by itself or over my jacket.

I won't ride with the windshiled without it on.

I'm not getting 'beat up' by what I guess is called buffeting, I'm only getting the blast from the underside that comes up each side of the tank, not from wind coming over the top.

The windshield(s) I have are all 23" wide, and I have 3 different heights. One is a HD 22" (from the headlight cutout to the top), one is a Cee Bailey 20", and the third is a Cee Bailey 18".

I don't know.. LoL...

I had the same problem.. bought these deflecters (Lowers) by Memphis shades.... does keep the air from coming up from below the gas tank.
Recently took a trip down I-10 from San Antoino to El Paso.
Going 80 mph for extended periods had less helmet wind buffeting then I had at 55 without the Lowers.
