I am going to say it is fuel related. A half gallon of fuel is pretty shallow when spread across the bottom of the tank, especially when riding and bouncing down the road. I would take it to the dealer to see if it had any codes, but if none, I say fuel.
Thanks guys for the responses. I'm thinking its fuel related also since it happened both times when I was low on fuel. I guess the Ultra and Road King I had in the past had more fuel in them when the light came on, because this has never happened to me before now.

The gas gauge on my Fatboy doesn't work so I just use the tripodometer and fill up every 150-160 miles. I also check mpg's every fill up and average about 39 mpg. YMMV
Yeah the ECM issue I mentioned would put you out of commission so if you're still able to start and ride after it sputters then I'd say fuel too. The only time you will get 200 miles out of a tank on the Heritage is if you are riding slow and go all day long...like a ride in the mountains or any other slow roads. Normally you will get between 150-170 and 170 is pushing it. I pretty much fill up at 150 or sooner. If that little light comes on it's def time to look for a station.
I have had it happen on my 2013. I hadn't had it very long, gas light was on and going up and down some big hills it sputtered and lost power. My street bob had never done this so I thought something was wrong. It was just low fuel and the hills I was going through I think.
I did have a major problem later though when my gas guage quit working all together. The dealership had my bike for almost 3 weeks to figure out and fix the problem. The main wiring harness had to be replaced. Under warranty of course, but still it was a huge pain in the ***.
I've pushed my '04 to 195 miles and every time I slowed down it died. Took 4.9 gallons to fill. Light normally comes on at 170-180 and a fill is 4.5 gallons at that point.
If it happens with a full tank, take it back to the dealer, that's what your warranty is for.
I can easily get 180 miles out of my Fatboy. It's an 09 with a 96er in it though. Those 103s suck it down. I average about 42mpg with FuelPak & V&H BSS pipes. I routinely wait until my light comes on before I get gas. I've gone 20 miles past where it said I should and still only put in 4.2 gallons. I've thought about doing a little bending surgery on my float to get it more accurate.
My wife's 12 Heritage is another story. She's got the 103 with stock pipes on, and when her gas light comes on, she's almost out of gas. Very different than my Fatboy.
1st time at 16k she missed out several times for couple days then died. wiggled the batter cables and got her home.
To fix perm, tighten battery bolts...
2nd time, Pin hole in gas line at 33 and 4yrs old. Three tanks in a row on a trip, 90 miles after filling she'd start missing.
Fix new hoses and filter inside tank.
