has anyone used the new harley fuel additive, i brought some last night (at 6.95 a bottle i want be making a habit of that). but wanted to see if i could figure whats in it. (dualt?). smells and looks like techron. when i asked the parts guy what he knew about it, all he said with a dumb look on his face was.(we sell a lot of it). since i just got over a fuel problem was womdering what others use. i use as high of octane as possible and ocassionaly a booster or cleaner. may have to go to racing gas, but not a big fan of storing it in my garage or barn
I don't see the need. Gasoline has plenty of detergents in it to keep your injectors clean. My FI bike has 64k miles on it and hasn't had any thing other than gas put in it. It is doing just fine.
Racing gas? Are you running a high comp motor? If not, that would be a waste of $$.
I don't add anything either. Besides, gas is too expensive to add anything else. Of course I am paying in Kalifornia dollars which is like Canadian dollars except Canadian dollars go further.
I did an experiment with my Dad in the late 90's. That HD stuff has been out forever. We were going to do engine mod's that winter (got the bike in July), so I told him to use it at every fuel stop. I made sure he had several bottles in Tour pack. When we tore down, No carbon at all, all parts looked new. It is an expensive endevore to do. I think it is a gimmick, however did work. If you were planning on going 100000+ miles on a motor do it. Top end overhauls aren't that much.
You can mist a little water in the intake at a fast idle to steam clean any carbon off the top end. I've been doing it for years. It works great.
I recently did it on my Ironhead, right before were tore it down to fix a wrist pin problem. The piston tops, domes of the heads, valve seats, and valves were nice and clean.
According to HD Softtails and Dyna's should use the high octane fuel. I was advised to use the additive during the winter months when the bike is not getting out as much and not going to be winterized.
i dont think harleys additive is anything special. i have a guy who does oil anyalis for me on auto oils. i will ask him if he can have it tested , i bet it is techron. it sure looks exactly the same and smells the same also, and i get techron free.
