Default new project softail

I don't post here much because I primarily build Sportsters but some of you may remember the Deluxe I put together for my brother

Now I have another softail project for a family friend who lost both legs 8 years ago. He owns the very first bike I ever saw when I was very young. It's a 68 Pan-Shovel. I remember being afraid of how loud it is but eventually he couldn't come over without giving me a ride on it as soon as I heard him coming down the driveway. He and his bike are the sole reason I build choppers.

Anyway, he recently asked me to get him back on a bike and I started searching immediately. He wants a 70's style chopper (right up my alley) trike with reverse. That's all he gave me to go on. I found a softail being sold at a very reasonable price just a few hours away from me and hit the road.

Turns out it's not a Harley at all but an S&S motor in an old Paughco softail frame. I was pleasantly surprised. A diamond-in-the-rough, if you will.

Here it is when I got it home

I went through the carb and changed a few lines just to get it running down the road before I started in on it. Last night I began the tear down

And that's where I left off for now. Next I will remove the drive train and sandblast the frame to give it a good once-over and make repairs if needed. I already have the trike axle, swingarm and chain conversion is on its way. Adding reverse is the only thing I'm nervous about.

Thanks for looking! I will update along the way.
