Default Deluxe seat bolts

Anyone see problem with replacing the plate that has the studs that come through the fender to mount your seat to with standard harley fender seat nuts and just using bolts to put the seat on? with a rack and a fender bib my stock ones are to short. I know I would have to drill out the holes a little larger but thats easy. it would also allow me to get rid of the stupid plastic washers that hold the bolt plate in place.

My additional thought is to put 1/4 x 20 studs into the huge seat nuts and be able to use them when I want the passenger seat on.

Saw a recent post here where they took the bracket and welded new longer threads to it. I know on my Fatboy with the motherwell rack and fender bib I have no issues with the stock set up.

Saw that also. I think in the long run the fender nuts that stay in place will be easier to deal with. Is there any reason why they wouldn't be ok. Trying to second guess why the factory went to this silly system in the first place. As in there is some structural reason the bolt plate is necessary?

I think that with that larger plate under the fender it gives more strength to the mount, more so for when the pillion is mounted.

Ah... they got a good deal on them by buying them by the ship full and they still have several hundred zircon containers of them?

I think the design has the bolts come through to utilize the specially shaped nuts so that they can remain hidden with the pillion attached, and so you don't have to take them off to remove the pillion. The older style with the bolt going through the fender requires the entire assembly to be removed just to take the pillion off. I took those ugly plastic retaining washers off. I don't think one style is any more stronger than the other. You should be able to swap with out any problems I would think. I've seen guys run clean ( no hardware at all) fenders and only those suction cup style pillions, so the fender struts are where the strength is. HTH.
