Default Rocker Owners….question.

Hi guys,

I bought the HD axle covers Part # 44345-09 for my Rocker C (2008) and I was reading the installation instructions and I need to lift my bike…at least the rear tire…to install the covers. I don't have a lift or chokes…any idea on what to do?

Do I really need to lift the rear tire? Can someone sit on the bike to keep it balance?

I was thinking on using my car jack…and have someone sit on it to keep it balance.

Also what size is the axle nut? to remove it….

Thanks.

you probably dont need a lift
you need to just loosen the axle nut a tad on the 1 side
the covers are slotted on one side
size is 3/4 i think , belive you need allen wrench too

3/4" Allen wrench or socket. I went with Heartland covers front and back and only needed to knockout the plastic insert in the rear axle to run the spring through the hollow axle for the rear.
The front needed their included drilled out replacement front axle nut to mount.

Perfect time to get a lift. You'll need it later. The money you save instead of paying someone to install parts/work on your bike will quickly pay off any you spend for shop tools you buy.

I have a harbor freight lift and it's worked perfectly for me. Sears also makes a motorcycle lift but theirs is probably more expensive the the harbor freight one.

You don't have to wish for someone to have around and help anymore as long as you have us here bud. I knew absolutely zero about HD when I bought my rocker in 08. Fast forward to now and I have had my bike totally apart (only thing I haven't taken off the frame is the engine and transmission. Everything else has come off at one point or another. I tore open the top of the motor and put it back on among many other things.

I've done it all with the help of the good people on this web site and a shop manual (which you should definitely purchase). No better feeling than working on your own machine, even if it's as simple an an oil change.

I agree…. HD Forums has a lot of info and members help every chance they get…. most of the time I search previuos threads and find a lot of good info…

I found another thread regarding lifts and they also recommended the harbor freight lift($188), I found a Torin Recreational Vehicle Lift — 3/4 Ton, Model# T64017 for $99… (also recommended in the thread) I think is a good deal…maybe on black friday I can get it for less.

Im just afraid to load my bike… I think is going to tilt on the side…and there goes the paint… you spend so much $$ and time working on it… is like my 3rd child.

Now just looking for a Torque Wrench (should be 95-105) for the rear, correct?

What do you suggest to remove the axle nut? I know the sizes are 9/16 and 3/4

A hex bit socket? I found a 9/16…. but so far not the 3/4

Thank you again for all the info.

No Doubt getting a lift is the way to go. I went with the Harbor freight lift. Good quality - fair price. Nothing can replace the detailed info in the HD shop manual. I too went with Top Down's chrome spikes up front. Since I wanted to keep the swing arm as blacked out as possible, (In keeping with HD's concept of simulated hard tail). I went with Heartland's black covers in the back. [/SIZE]

I found this lift at Harbor Freight
1500 lb. Capacity ATV/Motorcycle Lift
Pittsburgh Motorcycle
Item #: 69995
Sale: $99.99

and they might have it for less on black friday…

I felt like in a candy store…

I also found a few tools that I will need to instal the axle covers and future maintenance...

- 25" breaker bar 1/2" drive
- 1/2" drive impact hex driver set (with 9/16 and 3/4, plus 6 more)
- 1/2 in. Drive Click Type Torque Wrench
