Fluid changes question?
Could someone give me the run down on changing the oil, primary, and tranny fluid on my new 02 Fat Boy so I can get them done ASAP. I'll pick up a manual one day this weel but would like to change all the fluids tonight or tommorrow. I need to know how much each holds and where the drain plug is for each... This twin cam is much different than my EVO...lol...
Yeppers, remove filler cap on oil tank, locate and follow the linedown from the back of the oil tank which goes to the bottom of frame, behind pipes, remove oil bolt/plug from the inside of the line you followed down, and out comes oil (oh make sure shes warmed up first). Replace filter (enjoy large mess until you customize a water bottle to secure runaway oil from filter). Fill oil tank with appropriate amount of oil (use dip stick if no manual is available), start bike, check oil level and add as needed.
Transmission oil bolt/plug is between the softail shocks in a god awaful spot, find it. remove transmission dip stick cap, remove bolt/plug between shocks, oil comes out. Replace bolt/plug. Fill transmission, check with dip stick (bout a 3/4 quart).
Primary plug is a small star wrench just under the rear back portion of the primary cover. Loosen and remove, oil comes out, replace plug, take off primary cover in HD specified order, or every third one, carefull not to damage large gasket, set gasket aside in a clean area, may reuse if not damaged, i have twice with no issues. take a small funnel and place it at a perfect angel into the lower primary and fill with 1 quart of oil, replace gasket and primary cover.
this can be done in under an hour, be patient and easy on the torque with oil bolt/plugs.
Now a full scavenger oil change is a real good time, but thats a different day [sm=bangbang.gif]

Unibomber thanks for the info... So I guess the oil and Primarywas the same for the EVO and the Twin Cam. Now is there any secrets to the Tranny plug that might be helpful? Is this bolt a allen, star, or regular bolt. Thanks!!!
I think it is both, it has a center star srench and outter socket fit, I remember barely being able to fit the socket in between the shocks using an extension, but it worked,, I worry about stripping the star wrench hole.
Bomber is dead on it.Just remember you probably won't be able to get 3.5 quarts of engine oil in.2.5 will probably be closer.I use the Torx socket to fish it out.A little teflon tape to put them back in.
