My Softail Rebuild
After I got the wiring harness finished I called up the IL Licensed Rebuilder again. Since I decided to restore the bike back to 100% Harley, he now (unlike the first time we talked early in the project) advised me to go ahead with the "Rebuild" process and NOT the "Custom Build" process.
The good news is that by doing the "Rebuild" process, the VIN number will stay the same and NOT get added to. Additionally, the title will also continue to say "Harley".
From an insurance point of view this is great because Progressive told me that they will not insure bikes that have a "state assigned VIN number" which I believe is what I would have got if I went "Custom Build" process.
The bad news is that the state is going to charge me Sales tax on everything that I did not pay Sales tax on...which is the frame, motor, and most of my small parts. I paid $100 to the Licensed Rebuilder for his inspection and paper work submittal. I'll pay about $200 to the state for the new title and license. And then another $300 or so for sales tax.
At the end of the day, I learned a lot...which was the whole point.

There are still a few things that I need to fix:
1) For some reason my hi-beam dash indicator is reversed...shows on for lo-beam, but not for hi-beam.
2) My Neutral indicator is wishy-washy and sometimes falsely indicates neutral when it's in gear. Makes me wonder if my neutral tranny sensor is bad?
3) I need to get my Mikuni carb adjusted better. After warm up, when I shift and start to engage the throttle the bike hesitates..sputters a little, until I give it more gas. It only happens at low throttle right after shifting. Makes me wonder if it's more than a carb adjustment issue?
4) I need to remove my home-made electrical bracket under the seat and paint it...it's starting to rust.
5) I need to figure out what I'm going to do for a fuel gage. The tank that I have came with the rolling frame and was hacked by someone. It was originally an EFI fuel tank and someone drilled out the bracket that held the fuel pump. I welded up the holes and installed a petcock to get it to work with my carb. However, I don't have a float to operate the fuel gage. I'm looking at the 2006 fxst parts manual for a carb bike and see the float..but need to figure out how to mount it and then how the electrical works to get the float reading to the fuel gage.
6) Lastly, I need to remove the tank, fenders, and struts and paint everything. Below is the color that I'm thinking about (minus the dark stripes). See attached picture.
One note: My original design for the bike was to do a bobber but my wife had a fit that my design only had one seat. As a compromise I decided to go with the Le Pera seat and the removable rear seat and the detachable harley back brace. 99.9% of the time the rear seat and back brace won't be on the bike. I think it's a good compromise.
