Retaining Ring Installation Question
I just got done installing new street slammer bars and braided lines on my 03 duece.I got down to the clutch cable and that is where my problem begins.I followed the manual and everything went great except for a friend that was over helping and started messing with the retaining ring before i could get back out to the garage. It says in thepaperwork to put it back to approximately the same position and the service manual saysthe retaining ring opening must be installed to the right of the outer ramp tab slot. I did a search and one guy put the opening directly over the outer ramp tab slot.So my question is where does theopening for the ring supposed to go ? The manual shows a picturebut i just wanted to ask and make sure. All replies and help IS GREATLY appreciated!
[align=left] The problem I had was there is another slot to the right of the tab slot, so I didn’t know if this was going to cause problems. But after carefully reading the instructions several times, I put it to the right of the tab slot as shown in the diagram, ignoring the second slot. I didn’t think the instructions were written all that well, IMHO. They don’t say why it has to be in that position, what the tolerance for error is, or what the consequences are if you get it wrong. Great Service Manual isn't it? Put it back like you found it.They didn't sayput it back with the hole located in some certain place, its not engineered so it can only go back in one way. No. Harley says put it back like you found it and then doesn't even go so far as to show you a picture of how it should go. It makes you wonder what they were thinking when they wrote that section
Look at the bottom ramp plate, the one the ***** ride in. See the tab that sticks out and locks it into the housing? You need to center the split of the ring over the grove in the housing that the tab rides in after the top plate is put back on. I have a photograph of the thing in the correct position that I would be happy to E-Mail to you if that would help. I'd post it but for some reason I can't gain access to my webspace. Also, with the ***** in the ramps properly the two ramp-plates will still be separated by about a sixteenth of an inch so you can tell if they are properly seated.
Once you put it all back together its not a bad idea to go ahead and do the full clutch adjustment. Run down the cable adjuster so full adjustment remains available. Then squeeze the clutch in and release a few times just to make sure everything is seated. Follow that up by leveling the bike up, removing the Derby and adjusting as per the Manual (release the lock nut, adjust for slight contact of the center pin and then back out the center pin a half to a full turn, lock down the lock nut and put the derby back on) and then adjusting back up the line to the finalhandle/cable free-play of about 1/16th inch.
