I just finished a 95"bb kit on my 06 nightrain, and couldn't decide on 95 or 98 either. I was then told by my indie mech if u go the 98 it leaves absolutely no room for any future honing if you need to clean it up down the track. You would need to buy new jugs. That's why I went the 95 with my heads and tb ported. The bike had .510"S&S cams when I bought it and I think they are very similar to the 204s and was told they were too aggressive for a stock 88 but would suit a 95 very well. I still haven't put a new tune in the se super tuner but the increase in power is very noticeable already, mostly low down torque. Im very happy with it and hope this was some help to you!
For the cams you're using roller rockers aren't really necessary. Go over .600 lift and they get more important. I use them on everything from my 53Pan to my 011 Fatboy though just because I think they are easier on the valve guides but necessary, no unless you've got $400+ extra to spend.

Oz,
Yes that does help actually. But I still want that extra 3 ci. I did look at ebay and stock jugs are around 100 bucks,so I'm not to worried about that.
For now I'm thinking of staying with stock tb but interested to see what options i have for porting my 04 tb.

Snowyone,
Man Its snowing as i type! I know the cams Im thinking of using don't require having roller rockers, but why not? If I'm gonna have it apart and I have to mod rocker box covers and lower box covers.I figure do it now.
those numbers are respectable.I would be happy with that. What tune did you use?
I had a TTS that I used for the Stage 1 upgrades so I went with that and a custom tuner who knew whet he was doing.
As far as not doing the heads at time... budget played a big part in that. And they can be done later and really wont cost me anymore than if I did it with all the other upgrades. Same money either way except for having it retuned.

I started this because I wanted to upgrade cam chain tensioner with the new hydo se cam plate and h.o. oil pump. And while in there why not upgrade cams and inner cam bearings,I have se cam plate kit,204 se cams,se adjustable push rods,se lifters.
If you haven't done anything with the SE plate, yet, take it back to the dealer and see if you can trade it even for the complete '07 plate and camchest kit... then sell the SE204 (if they won't take it back) and get an Andrews cam that is made to work with a roller chain but that will fit your '04 engine cases (inner journals are smaller than the '07's). IMHO using a linked chain is a waste of a lot of good work on your part when you make all these other mods.
Who told u the 204s were crap? The 204s are great one of the most used cams out there. .Run the 204 cams u have grab a 95inch big bore and ur ahead of the game with the 2006 heads . use a 30 thousands head gasket and enjoy! It's cheap the 95inch kit is cheap my dealer sells them for 400$. If u want to get crazy send the heads to big boyz for a 299$ port job
If your going the big bore with head work I would go with a bigger cam I beleive the 204 is great for a bike with a stage one or a bike with a modest upgrade but when your going all the way I myself would ditch the 204s
I have an 04 fatboy I did last year, 98ci , Andrews N37 , stock 07 up cam plate , Power Vision , heads done by Dan Vance Racing (Conn.) , Tuned by Blackhills Ken (NJ).
It runs real strong for a mouse build , 104HP / 107Torque , A lot of fun to ride.
FWIW, head work makes a big differance.
Good news I got the used 06 heads today and they look like stock but clean(500 miles).I also purchased a set of used 88ci takes offs cylinders on ebay cheap, so that I can send out to get work done with out having to tear down my bike and if I want to I can always go back to stock.
Also the other good new was I was able to return the 204s to the dealer now im not tied down to s.e. cams. I am looking into a few local indys and venders on this site before I pull the trigger. But I am glad I can go with woods or Andrews cams now.
Im going on vacation next week to LA so Im going to check out a shop while there also,Anyone ever heard of Dave Mackie engineering? Im looking at the mega-sphere 95"
And when I get a chance I will call hillside see what there prices are like.
Good news on the cams. I had Dave Mackie work a set of shovel heads for me about
20 years ago and this work was very good. I'm sure someone here can chime in, that has more recent work done. But he is very good and has been doing it for a long time.
