Yeah, the actual chrome plating is very thin. If you try to polish out most scratches, you end up going through the chrome to the nickel or copper underneath. (not good)
I have had good luck with 0000 Steel wool and Mothers chrome polish to remove surface scratches & light rust.
I have read that this and have heard of others doing it for years.
But, I've tried 0000 steel wool twice in my life and though it will remove rust and burnt on stugg, it also makes the chrome Fuzzy or dull compared to the mirror look it should have.
Just me but I wouldn't recommend using it to anyone.
Yrs ago some said Aluminum foil would remove rust,, it would remove the rust, but would scratch the chrome pretty bad also.
Any chrome Polish would be preferred choice. IMO.
Never Dull is what I think is the best for cleaning/polishing chrome.
Is there any product or method to fixing or polishing scratches from chrome other than having it re plated?
That would depend on the severity of the scratch and the quality of the chrome.
I found that 0000 grade steel wool is useful to polish light scratches out of good Harley chrome, but if I tried the same thing on a set of V&H slip-ons it would dull the finish.
Thanks guys it on my heat shields new are $70 each plus shipping, re chroming was $60 each plus shipping or I found the whole exhaust free shipping for $195 so maybe this summer I will do that.
