Default FXSTB Front End Alignment Problems

Over a year ago I dropped by bike and knocked my front end out of whack (tubes were not bent) and a friend of mine helped me get everything straightened back out, or so I thought. It ran fine and true with no problems with steering or alignment, I could ride hands free down the road and never pull to either side.

Well last weekend I decided I wanted to upgrade my front end to Progressive Monotubes and have my lowers PC'd black so I took apart my front end. I noticed that my forks were really hard to get out of the trees and I had to tap them out with a hammer. I started looking at the forks again today doing a little clean up because the tree holes were really grimy and I thought maybe the dirt made the forks stick. After cleaning the trees up I inserted a tube back in and noticed that the holes are not aligned, not even close. They are out of alignment by about 1/2" so unless I line them back up I'm not going to have much luck getting my front end put back together!

What is the procedure to aligning my trees without the forks being in place?

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but I think the answer to your question is that the forks are what align your trees. The trees will rotate independently of one another until they are connected to the fork tubes. If the out of alignment condition is not of a rotational nature, or when one fork is installed the other does not align, then new trees or complete neck inspection might be in order.

Yea I think I got ahead of myself and the flashback of dropping my bike put me in panic mode lol. I thought the trees would move independently of each other so the forks would align them but When I tried to move them they were solid as a rock. I just walked out to the garage and put a pipe through the trees and twisted and they lined right back up. Guess I just needed some leverage.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction
