Smile 2013 Softail Breakout Mods

I had just over 950 miles on the bike when I figured out it was time to pull the trigger on modding my bike to make it my own. The Breakout is fun to ride and a head turner in stock form, but there were changes I wanted to build into the bike. Mostly just for personal taste... I wasn't trying to go for a 1/4 mile bike or a land speed record machine. I recently emptied my stable with an RC-51, CBR1000RR and a WR426. I feel fortunate to have had the experience on these amazing machines, good memories, good times, but after all these years, the HD now has my undevided attention. As my best friend once told me, 'never forget your where you came from'. So, much respect to the metrics.

ps... thanks to all the guys who post on here with good questions and great builds... you, your posts, and pics helped me to build my bike, even before I was an HD Forum member.

Here is my build starting out in Septermber 2013, with a pic taken that amazing day at the dealership in Smokey Point, Washington...

Default Some first mods

The first thing that had to go was the factory pipes. There is no way she can look like this and sound like a moped. Vance and Hines chrome 2 into 2 for the Breakout. I guess because of the frame width, there is a slightly different bend than the standard softails for fitment...

Default Derby

Next was a tip of the cap to my old shipmates... Navy derby cover on the breakout.

Default Intake

Had to do the heavy breather and SE Mod Chip to complete the pipes. I swapped out the pegs, grips etc with some Arlen Ness chrome pieces. I did the throttle cables, clutch and brake lines at the same time. You might want to do the clutch cable BEFORE the exhaust, as the trans side cover has to be pulled for install.
Its definitely worth noting that the exhaust sounds absolutely amazing. Throaty, nasty rumble without being so loud its just embarrassing. You still gotta raise your voice if the bike is idling, but freeway cruise is comfortable... ish. In a garage with a twist it two in the throttle, sh*t might fall off the shelves.

A special thanks to Sound Harley Davidson in Smokey Point for flashing the prom with a pricy load for a free.99... I'll be back very soon for the dyno tune.

Arlen Ness Grips and a HD Daymaker headlight. The light is noticibly brighter, but mostly its just better focused where you need it. Really nice, but not sure if its worth the bucks.

EDIT: Now that I've had a more time to enjoy the bike, I can say that there is NO WAY I WOULD SWAP THIS LIGHT BACK TO OEM. In fact, if I could only do ONE mod to a bike, it would be between this light, and the exhaust. The Daymaker puts out a perfect pattern of pure white light. Night driving is much better. This single light is brighter than any of the HID setups on my previous machines, and much brighter than my Jeeps lights. I couldn't even imagine what the glides running two of these things would be like!

They are manufactured by Speaker under their Evolution LED line. Kind of funny, but we have Speaker LED lighting on a bunch of our heavy equipment at work. Not Evo line, fortunately... Or I'd probably get fired.

Cool

Factory front breakes on a 700lb bike are quite a bit different than the RC51. Not sure how much performance gains I'm gonna get out of a single disk, but then again, she's not going to be running a MotoGP race.

Default front end

The HD Daymaker installed. I have to guess these are made by 'Speaker' lights with HD logos on them. They are definately an improvement over the stocker that hit the scrap pile. Ness chrome grips, no mirrors yet... Yup, my front signals are gone, wires hanging. I figure the other cars out there can tell which way I'm turning by where the sparks are coming from. Sweet.

Default More front end candy

So, the weather sucks up here in the Seattle area, and yeah... fair weather rider in training to be a real rider...
I swapped out the front bucket for the Headwinds piece. Kinda funny how they do this.. they were pissed that china was knocking off their product, so they undercut them and made their own legit knock-off in house. Big bling, low buck. Good enough for my ride.
I also chucked the front rotor and caliper in favor of the DNA two piece rotor and 6 piston caliper. I am running the factory breakout master cylinder... 9/16" I think. The brake pull/feel is completely normal. No miles on the setup to give you performance info.
