Replaced the coil and it ran good for a day and same problem came back. Looks like Dan was right, I was riding at night in Daytona for bike week and it happened again but this time I left the bike running while it was spitting and sputtering and saw a blue spark at the main CB. The bolts seemed to be backing off allowing the wire to Lise connection intermittently and was drawing power from the bike. Tightened the bolts down and it's been running good for about 5 days now. The only other problem is now that I've got it fixed and on the road, I've gotten 2014 Street glide special fever. Maybe HD dealer will give me a decent trade in?!?
Those !@#$@!! loose bolts and wires have been causing bikers grief since, well, er, um.... since the first bikes I guess.
Glad you found it! I agreed with Dan when I saw his post, but didn't figure I would be adding any value to the thread if I said anything. I chose to wait it out and see if the coil fix worked or you got "reminded" of the issue again...

Don't count on getting a good trade on it man. Keep that classic '88 and buy the 2014 some other way.
Tom, I was thinking along the lines of increased resistance due to a poor electrical connection, but the problem here seems like it was a loose connection, causing an arc.
I think an electrical arc throws ohm`s law out the window, but the thought of arcing at the connection never crossed my mind in this discussion.
If I`m not careful, I`ll learn something new every day...
