One of my 6 speeds is on an 88 engine, and it does fine, although the final drive ratio is a little lower than on the other bike with a 96.

A six-speed is a fun toy, but that's about all it is. Harleys don't care much what rpm they run at, and have such a broad power band that even a 4-speed is fine.

I wish I had a 6th gear just for lower RPM's at cruising speeds 75+.

Put a SE 6-speed gear set in my '03 Night Train (88). Doing more traveling and love the overdrive... don't want another bike w/o one. The Softail 88 and the SE 6-speed were ment for each other.

You could put in a taller primary drive ratio, or change belt pulleys.

You may find yourself shifting down on really big hills, but otherwise your 88 should pull the 6th gear fine.

overall If I had a 88''er I wouldn't even think about installing a 6speed on a stock or just a stg1 motor.

For the 1st 15k on my 07 with just stg1 (pipes, SERT, dyno) every time I used 6th on a trip she just felt like she was laboring, no matter at what speed and I'd loose gas mileage. It'd go from 42-43mpg in 5th gear VS 38-39 mph in 6th gear.

Then after I added the 26H cams at 15K she'd now pull 6th easy even down to 55 and I saw an immediately increase from 38-39 to 44-47 mph on trips using 6th..

another thing is I've read there is on a 350 at 65mph and-500 difference in rpms at 80.

so unless you do a lot of 75 and above riding.. I'd think it'd be a waste of money.

But if you have to do it, I'd for sure install some cams to have enough TQ so it you motor will pull it..

just my .02 cents..

If your 5 sd was junk and you needed to replace it the Baker would be a great upgrade. It is much better than the stock trans and shifts very smooth. Would it be cost effective to replace a perfectly working trans? I don't think so. For $2500 I could get a shot gun shock and a new cam and still have money for gas. That is My 2 cents.
