I have an opportunity to buy either a 2014 softtail, 2013 softtail lo or 2014 Fat Bob and would like additional opinions on the pros and cons of the bikes. I have not ridden much in the last 20 years since I was stationed overseas. I am 5'9, 205. I have taken the Rider's Edge course and have my "M" designation and have taken a short test ride on each bike. I like the softtail and the Fat Bob, and the lo seems a little too low, especially in the cornering dept. My riding is going to be solo cruising, with perhaps and overnight or two. I just want a few opinions on the bikes from those who have more experience with the bikes.
Take a longer test ride on them. I think either Fatboy model or even the Slim would work for you. The Fat Bob is a nice bike, but the ride does not compare to a Softail.
In my opinion, if you want the sporty ride, get the bob. If you're looking for comfort and distance, get the softail. I was actually exactly in your shoes and I got the fatboy. Sometimes I want the Lo for aesthetic reasons.
You should make your own decision, ride em, and if you're into modding--what's your vision?
Your choice, but take them for a long road test. They're two completely difference bikes. The Fat Bob is has a rubber mounted engine/trans to frame. The Softail is a solid mounted engine/trans to frame & has a B engine, which means it's balanced so it doesn't vibrate like the older ones did. Someone mentioned comfort & distance on a Softail, 'Really'!!!!

Yes softails are very comfortable over long distance even though they are not tourers and not "as" comfortable. I can do ten hours days on my heritage and I have with absolutely no pain (back problems) and no cramping in my legs (because the floorboards are low and forward).
