Default oil Temps

My oil temp was about 220 deg riding before I changed the exhaust from stock. It would climb rapidly when idling at a light. After The V & H Big shots were installed it ran about 210 and slowly climbed while idling at a light. Yesterday I changed all the oils to Redline synthetic. Today I went for a long ride and the temp never went over 190 on the trip while moving. Sitting at a light it would go up to 200 max. It sure is a testament to the quality of Redline oil!!! I also have no problem finding neutral and the clunk is greatly diminished.

I've been debating whether to go Redline or Mobile 1. Dealer sells a kit w/ RL oil for all 3 holes for around $110. Expensive oil change, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. I've got a 1000 miles to make my decision.

That is what I did. Don't forget the O-rings for the drain plugs and the oil filter are not included. Dealer charges $300 for a oil change with mineral oil. $135 for the oil, O-rings and oil filter was a bargain. I also have a cool funnel for filling the trans and a hat and stickers. What a deal!!! :-)

Drove To Birmingham today and had to idle in traffic. Temps never went over 210. A good oil makes a lot of difference! Before they went a lot higher with any idling.

HD sells those little O-rings for a buck each. Here's a deal on ebay for 100 of them.

you can't put Mobil-1 in all 3 holes. Go with RL if you want 1 oil. I use Amsoil myself. Either is good.

That dealer is raping you, charging 110 for the 'kit.' Even purging all the oil out of your motor you should only need about 6 quarts, and a filter. You can beat his price if you look around.

I don't have the problem with the temp but I definitely have the issues with the clunk and finding neutral. I would love to eliminate or reduce those problems. Anyone one else had these positive experiences?

Two areas that help with that is the oil grade in the Primary and in the Transmission.

I find the gear change clunk much reduced after going to the below oil combination.

Engine gets Mobil 1™ V-Twin 20W-50 every 5K - $9.60 at Meijer

Primary gets Mobil 1 Racing 4T™ 10W-40 every 5K - - $9.60 at Meijer

Transmission gets Red Line V-Twin Transmission Oil With ShockProof every 10K - $16.95 at Summit

I always use 1qrt of new oil to purge the engine at each oil change.

What was the ambient temperatures in each case?

Mine ranges between 175 and 225 degF depending on the ambient - same oil.
