You do not need to remove the tank from the bike. I disassembled and reassembled the "guts" with the tanks still on the bike. I only removed the tank because I switched out my tins. Just be sure to have towels and even painters tape to prevent scratches on your paint. I also disconnected all the connectors on the gauge cluster so I didn't have to drape it over the top bar clamp. Just be very careful if your going to attempt it yourself. It was way easy to do but careful practices are needed with the fuel still in the tank.
Draining those tanks are very messy!! Maybe someone else has better suggestions, just telling you my experience with removing the fuel pump and float. As said before the 08-up tanks only have two plastic tabs to release from the tank and about 2 mins to figure out how it all goes in and out. For the 07-earlier, there is an arm for the pickup that has to be first released which is a little more difficult to figure out. You may not have to remove it at all if your float is simply stuck or if you see broken wires or if a connector became unplugged. Examine first and you may not have to remove the pump and float.
Good luck and hope it's a simple fix.
