I popped off my cam cover with the bike on the jiffy stand and a very slight declining driveway. Lost almost no oil at all. Put a plastic shopping bag or aluminum foil in between the motor case and frame to shed any drips into an oil pan below the bike. easy clean up.
At 26,000 miles, my "02" stock tensioners were barley half worn. Could have gone another 10,000 easy.
I eventually did the 07-up hydraulic cam plate upgrade with Andrews cams. But it's my opinion that there's nothing wrong with changing out the the stock cam tensioners for fresh ones, if need be and running the system as is.
S&S and Andrews have to love this design defect. I just bought a 2000 Softail with 13,500 miles and changed out to gear drive without even inspecting first. It sucked pulling almost a grand out of pocket for parts after dropping almost 5k into buying it, but decided the peace of mind was worth it. The more I think about this almost criminal cam set up, the more I think my next new bike might be Victory or Indian. I wonder how many new engines Harley has sold after the shoes disintegrate and grenade the lower half? They have been less than forthcoming about the whole issue.
