Here are some pics for you. As you can see, the hard bags rest on the frames, and are secured by a twist lock type bolt (best I can describe it). There are rubber inserts that go on the bottom of the hard bag for it to rest on the frames. There are three mounting points for the frame, and two for the bags, as you can see in the pic. The mounting points for the frame are two on the fender, and one on the passenger foot peg. It only takes 10-15 min to take them off. I have never found a reason to take them off.
Looking at all the options I've seen, I'm thinking that the best way to go is to get an aftermarket bracket, probably the Easy Bracket, and use with a HD bag. I'll lose out on the HD docking hardware, but that's the price you pay.
I've read on here, that using Easy Brackets with the Hard bags isn't enough support. The bags vibrate to much and crack. I was planning to do the same thing. But didn't want to take the chance of cracking the bags. So I'm using the Cycle Vision brackets. They work great. BUT aren't "quick detach".
Cycle Visions and Sumax both make the typical hard bag brackets. I have Cycle Visions on mine and am very happy with the quality. I don't see any way to make them quick detachable and strong enough not to bend.
I used the easy brackets on mine with some stock roadking bags I got for $100. I didn't use the supports, just the rigidity of the bag and the easy brackets hold pretty good as long as you're not hauling bricks. I've carried all my leather and a helmet on 1,500 mile trips with no problems yet. They've been on about a year now and are super easy to remove and install, just turn the key and lift them off.
Hey folks, I have a 2011 Fatboy Lo and I have the docking points for the Harley quick detach leather saddlebags. Each bag locks onto the mounts and there is a sort of arm that locks onto a mount point down by the passenger pegs.
Thing is, I would rather have hard saddlebags that match the vivid black on the bike, but I want to keep the quick detach options and hardware I have on the bike, and I'd like the bags to fit close and tight to the bike, for a clean, minimalist look. Anyone have something like this?
Thanks!
I'm looking for quick detach locking leather bags for my Fatboy Lo
