Easy fix, don't know why someone hasn't thought of it sooner. I have torn numerous things also when putting them into the bags.

Did you have to trim the bolt down at all so that the acorn tightened or was it fine as is?

Excellent idea! I have scraped my hands putting things in and getting things out of my saddlebags.

No, I thought I might need to use extra washers, but there were enough threads in the acorn nuts to tighten them all the way down with just the stock washer.

Replaced mine with the same acorn nut that is used on the lower mount. Much better than exposed threads. These have a built in thread lock.

Never understood why they allow exposed threads there.

I am with silver wolf. I would like to know what size. KBLHD could I just tell the HD parts guy I want a set of the nuts for the "lower mount" and he will know what I need including size? What is the lower mount? Sorry for my ignorance.

Funbikerchick. The part I ordered is the lower mounting acorn nut for the lower bag support. The one down by the rear foot peg. Harley part #7507.

I cut the exposed threads flush with the nut using a dremel and cut off wheel.. Then a piece of black gorilla duct tape over the nut. More room to put large items in and it all slides over the duct tape. No rips or scatches.
