Ok folks, now no one knows as well as I do how fast it can happen, maybe as much but unless you have hit one, not more. studiopeg and everyone else. If one hits a deer and does nothing I have to question ones sanity. I have to try something if for no other reason than I explained before, I allow my Son and the Mother of my one and only Grandchild/Grandson to ride my bike.

The incident I spoke of, hitting that deer, happened on my very last ride of last season. I just got my bike back on the road this past Saturday from my latest list of mods( another thread coming soon ). I got 3 miles outside of town and a big fat ground hog ran out and took off my left highway peg, running board and shifter pegs. I seen it just in time to raise my foot or I am sure he might have taken that off too.

That was broad daylight, 2 in the afternoon. No time to say *****, again!

Man, sorry to hear that!! That's gotta be a crappy feeling to get her back on the road, only to have some dumb piece of fur ruin your day again. Glad it was NOT your foot & you made it without road rash.

I do see the reason you and others are wanting brighter lights, I guess I got an upgrade to the HD part and figured it was good enough for me and my purposes. I don't ride at night unless I'm running late for some reason, or on an Iron Butt!!

Out here in the sticks we use this thing called a HORN. Granted I have had bucks charge my car from the brush and no time to react (three cars so far), but the horn really does make them turn and go the other way if you catch sight of them. The areas I see them all the time, I just lay on the horn all the way through.

And yes, I do have auxiliary lights just so I can be on the lookout.

since moving to a rural area I've had 3 charge my car. body guy here says people rarely hit deer, but get hit by them.
I hit one on the bike 3 years ago, locked both brakes up and slid into her at about 15 mph. She ended up in my lap for a few seconds and then we both went our separate ways.
Lights show them in the woods if you're vigilant you can slow it down a bit.
From travels you can tell a definite difference in deer, the ones that are around my neighborhood don't give a flying F about my pipes or horn, they're like overgrown squirrels.
stay safe.

Default Deer Kill

In 2013 in Delta County (western) Colorado four (at least) riders died after hitting these four legged devils. Our county has a small population but many great roads and destinations which draw thousands of riders from all over every summer. But most that were killed were local or from the region. Almost all fatal crashes here are not vehicle vs. bike but deer accidents or the mysterious "lost control" and ran off the road. I'm beginning to think some or even most of these latter types are actually deer collisions or the rider taking a wild swerve to avoid a deer and taking a serious off-the-road crash into rocks or over a cliff. I don't think the cops can tell if there isn't deer blood on the bike. To my knowledge, all these fatals were in daylight; most or all were riders of long experience.
Take care out there.

Yup, saw one up close and compared to my daymaker. HD opens them, puts the bar and shield in, reseals them (not very well I might add) tacks on 90% markup and calls them a Daymaker.

While last several posts are a little fatalistic on the subject I agree. Never saw any proof drag pipes save lives when it comes to deer. I'll still think it helps, but it's a crap shoot still.

I woulda hit a deer two weekends ago on bike in Door Co but I saw the doe first and braked.

In a car a year ago January I saw the herd bout 200 yds away coming towards the highway across a pasture. Then wham, this doe jumps out of the ditch into my drivers window. It's really the only time ever I ever experienced an accident without any possibility of reaction. I mean she timed it perfectly to miss my front quarter panel and suddenly the deer's head smashes my driver's window. A sniper wouldn't have done any better.

It was interesting that my perception was that her head went Through the window. Although it took couple of seconds to register that. Could be right or wrong but either way the window was gone. The 20 mile drive home in 10 below in WI was Really irritating.

So I still ride but that experience did change my take on it. Right deer wrong time is real, and I accept that. Still riding two lanes with brush/forest up to the roads.

I just look for the ones I can avoid or react to.

Over the winter I went back & forth on what kind of headlight upgrade I wanted to do. I own a auto body shop and fix car deer hits year round so when Im out on the bike at night thats always a concern of mine plus the stock headlight sucked. I was all set to buy the truck lite phase 7 until I saw pictures of it during the day at an angle. Didnt look like the light was even on. So cars at a upcoming crossroad might not even see it. I ended up buying the cibie headlamp and osram rally bulb from daniel stern. Is a good upgrade, fits like oem and with the passing lights on lighting is very good. I ride a little slower at night and blare the radio lol (might make a deer or two stop before running across the road)
