Default Ignition problem-Heat related

Hey,

I've got a 95 Nostalgia and it's shutting down on me after riding for a while.

The last time it happened, I had been on the highway for about an hour doing 75-80 mph. It was running well, no issues at all. I had to pull off for fuel and after gassing up it wouldn't start. I let it cool down for about 15 minutes and then was able to get it going again.

I got back on the highway and headed home, the whole time the bike was running fine. Then when I got off the exit ramp it died again in the intersection, and I had to roll it to the nearest gas station. Again, after waiting for 15-20 minutes it started right back up and I made it home no problems.

All the lights are still on when it dies and it will crank the engine, but won't start.

The oil level looks good.

I've run a resistance test on the both the primary and secondary coil circuits and they test normal.

I tried putting heat on the module with a hair dryer to see if it would shut down the bike, and it kept idling fine.

The V.O.E.S. was recently checked and was ok.

Recent battery and I keep it on a maintainer when the bike sits.

The two other things I'm thinking might be related are the main breaker or the cam position sensor. Is the cam position sensor easy to check? It says in the manual the cover is riveted.

I'm getting tired of shelling out for "repairs" that don't fix the issues with this bike, so I'd rather try to get this resolved myself.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

I just took off the timing cover and hit the cam position sensor/ignition pick up with a hair dryer. I didn't think it was going to cause the bike to stall at first, but after a few minutes the engine stopped.

Now it will crank, but won't fire up, just like it was doing after riding for a while and then trying to slow down to idle. I'm going to wait for it to cool and try it one more time to be sure, but is this a good indication that the sensor needs replacing?

-Thanks

Just got it started and after 3 minutes under the hair dryer or so, it stalled again. The coil still seems relatively cool and the oil temp didn't get over 135, so I don't think anything else is overheating.

Am I right in thinking this is the problem? Is there anything else I should check before picking up a new sensor?

From what I've seen in the EVO Forum and from friends that have them, yes, that is the problem. I am under the impression it is quite common.

Try testing it again without the hair dryer. Start her up. If it runs for 5 or 10 minutes then you know it was the sensor heating up with the dryer. If it stops again after 3 minutes the hair dryer didnt cause it to shut down.

Started the bike up this morning and it idled fine for 10 minutes. Shut it down and then it started right back up no problem, so I'm going to go ahead and replace the sensor.

Part is on order.

I had to stay at the dealer for a bit to drool over the Road King and Street Glide. Not happening anytime soon though. Maybe I'll have to convince the misses she should learn to ride the nostalgia.....

Thanks for the help.

UPDATE:

So, after finally getting some time to replace the sensor, I took the bike out for a ride. It was running great, and I noticed a better idle.

I stopped after 30 miles of back roads at 55 mph or less to make a quick phone call and sure enough the bike wouldn't fire back up! Oil temp didn't get above 170. I waited about 20 minutes and it started right up again.

I was 90% sure the sensor was going to be the problem, it even had the "Brown Goo" drips I've read about from it melting a little.

I guess I'll try the main breaker and coil. I've heard of people replacing the breaker with a maxi-fuse. Does anyone have info on this?

The coil tested within range according to the multimeter. I've also heard that this still doesn't rule out a bad coil.

Someone also suggested I check the slow jet in the carb. It still sounds like an electrical problem to me, but maybe it's worth a look.

-Thanks

Update:

I swapped out the main breaker for a new one, it seems to have fixed the issue.
Now if this rain would stop....
