Man, what a big job! Much more challenging than I thought. The issue with the Fatboy's is you need to purchase a T/S remounting kit. The TS kit replaces the wide standoffs with thin posts. This is needed to allow the rear cam mechanism on the datatchable backrest sideplates to have adequate clearence. It took me a good 4 hours to install the TS kit. No big deal, it was a learning experience. I am concerned that now the wires up inside the fander will contact the spinning tire upon a "bottom out". After swapping the the new TS kit, you loose a bit of length on the wires. Now I cant really tuck the wires exactlywhere they belong.I don't want to redo the whole thing, so I will just keep a close eye on the wires. As for the actuall datachable BR kit, that was a snap... about 1/2 hour, and it was done.

Got all the parts to do the same thing to my Standard...just haven't installed them yet...I got a question...did you have to splice the TS wires back in or were there quick-connectors??

The HD T/signal relocation kit...the one that has the strut extenders in it... has 2 extended wires that are quick connect plug in type.

It is very difficult to put these new extended wires quick connects with in the tail light, so most people just try to get them secured as tightly as they can under the back fender's existing wire. (which I did..) for a good hour I struggled to get them to fit inside the tail light but no go.

I am sure you could if you cut the quick connectors and spliced instead it would be able to fit and not "worry" you about the tire ripping them out heh...

btw the kit that relocates the t/signals the one with the extended struts.. is very fugly, I am removing mine for the kuryakyn strut mount leds instead..

Put the detachable backrest/hardware kit on my Heritage couple of weeks ago. Didn't have to relocate the lights so how easy would this be (I thought).

I looked at the directions but didn't distinguish between the front and rear detachable mounts and ended up putting both sides on incorrectly. The front mount in the rear and vice versa. No big deal (I thought). It was late, decided to leave till morning and do a quick switch.

Well.......the locktite that is loaded onto the threads of the hardware kit works like a charm. I did not torque these things at all!!!! I got the one swapped out w/o problem but could not budge one of the allen head bolts on the other. Ended up rounding off the head of the allen head socket and pratically destroying one of the mounts.

To make matters worse, since one was "stuck" I decide to put the stock torx head bolt into the hole that I did remove - not only could I not get it all the way in but rounded off the torx head socket trying to get it back out.

Nothing was cross threaded and they weren't torqed at all. The locktite not only kept it from coming out but the residue from the locktite kept the old bolts from going back in. Had to clean out the threads with a tap.

That's my story. All this for a backrest I bought for my wife, who hasn't ridden with me since we had kids (13 years ago). I can always find a way to blame her for my stupidity.

Not only did a 30 min job turn into a nightmare, but try to findSAE tools in Europe!!!

Yes I did have to do a cut and re-splice on the TS wires. You initially need to cut the wires because of thesmall TSplug that plugs into the taillight assembly. You need tofeed the cutwires through the drilled passage (which is TINY in dia.) in the new TS post. All the necessary parts came with the kit. Good directions, HOWEVER there was NO mention about the wires being too short to tuck into the fender wireways after the kit was installed. I about guarantee experiencedHarley tech's will add about another 1" or so of wire to gain the needed length to slip the wires back into the fender wireways. I was thinking I did something wrong, but after reading the directions for a 5th time, I did everything exactly per the instructions.

My install was a real pain in the a$$, but my wires did fit snug but comfortable under the tabs on the bottom side of the fender.
