Default Dead Speedo - 02 night train

So out of nowhere my speedo and odometer quit me. Kind of strange I thought since it had no strange behavior prior to this (worked fine the day before). So I search this forum, and see its not all that uncommon for the speed sensor to foul up. So I pull it out and clean it off but it does not help at all. I have two questions. 1. According to most of the posts on this forum the speed sensor was only able to be accessed by taking rear tire off and splash guard. Mine is on the right side of the bike directly under the oil tank. No tire removal necessary. Did I pull the right sensor? It was a magnetic sensor for sure. 2. Is there a way to test the speed sensor or speedometer? Ive heard that if I hook my meter to the sensor and slowly turn the wheel I should see some voltage readings. Ive also heard that if I hold the trip button then turn on the ignition key the speedo should bounce all the way over to 120 then back to 0. I did that and nothing happened.

Do the sensors just up and quit like that? most people I talk to say that a cleaning should be able to get it working again.

anyhoo, thanks

Yes that is the speed sensor. But did you check the speedometer fuse? My 05 blew a Speedo fuse once. I also had to do a speed sensor.. but cleaning it didn't work. Had to buy a new one...

If the odometer numbers have disappeared, the speedo does not work, and the speedo illumination lights are not on, I would first look at the accessories fuse. In the heat of the summer, there is more strain on the electrical system. it should be a 15 amp mini spade-type fuse.

You pulled the right sensor. It's the connector that is in front of the splash guard. It's a 3 pin deutsch connector. Might be able to remove the two bottom splash guard bolts and pivot it out of the way far enought to get to it.

Any other issues? A completely bad speed sensor will cause a stalling condition when rolling to a stop, and the turn signals won't self cancel.

Mine quit at 32K. The best way (cheapest, no special tools, quick, accurate) to check is to find a buddy with the same year and model series (FXT for example or whatever) and do a temporary swap and see if that fixes it. I bought a used one on ebay and had the mileage reset.

speed sensor fixed it. I just removed the splash guard and got it wiggled in there. No blinkers and a carb, this really wasn't an issue but I let the OL ride it sometime so I want her to know how slow she is!
