Sissy bar mounting, no outer struts?

Sissy bar mounting, no outer struts?
I just bought a 99 night train and I need to mount a sissy bar before I head to Sturgis on Wednesday morning. No outer struts to be found in time, so do yall think if I mount the front of the side plates to the inner struts and use a spacer to take up the gap on the rear and mount to the fender it would be strong enough to strap a bag onto for the short trip? Bag won't be more than 40lbs or so.

Boy, I wouldn't think so. The support covers, at least on mine seem to hold up quite a bit. Just the two bolts near the front of the fender would allow a lot of flex with the extra weight.
