Although that makes sense, and that's what I do, I replaced my original Dunlop rear with a Command II and rode my Heritage with the Dunlop still on the front for a few thousand miles and noticed no ill effects.

I wouldn't make a habit of mixing tires, but I doubt that anything serious would come from doing it.
