Default Pricy service?

My "other" bike is a 2001 Fatboy that I keep in Texas, at the GF's for when I visit. I picked it up last March while vacationing and I know very little about it's history. I called an Indy down there to see what it would cost to replace the cam tensioner shoes (26,000 miles). I was quoted $683.49 to replace the shoes and install new lifters, which he recommended. SInce pushrods weren't mentioned, do you think he's pulling the heads? I hate that I can't spend more time down there and do it myself! What do you think? I think I need to call back and ask more questions!

Have you pulled the cam cover and checked the tensioners? I checked my '03 Deuce at 25.5k and my tensioners had very little wear. I'll check them again at 35k and I'll be surprised if they are worn significantly. I suppose I got lucky and got a nice smooth cam chain at assembly.

Given that you live in MN. and keep the bike in TX., how many miles are you going to rack up on it? Aside from that, the price you got quoted seems really decent to me.

Well I called back and his wife told me that he can change out lifters without pulling the heads and without changing to adjustables. I wouldn't have been able to do that on my old EVO! I've never opened a twinkie up, can you pull the cams 1st to change lifters? seems like either the cams or the pushrods would have to come out!

$683 to replace can tensioner shoes and lifters? If I were you, I'd just get the HD Hydraulic cam conversion kit. Comes with a upgraded oil pump. I think the kit costs around $450. Plus adjustable push rods for bout $150. Then add 3-4 hours labor.....so they say. You'd be spending a little more but I think its worth it.

You don't need to replace those lifters if the cams aren't being changed.

In fact they are likely better than what he will put back in.
