Looking to move out of my VROD and into either a Heritage or Springer. Want to keep within a $13K budget (as far within as possible) and looking for advice on what to look for, both positive and negative. Any particular years, engines, etc. Plan on keeping my 2012 Limited for touring and the softail for mostly local, fun rides.
With a springer you will spend more, so that means to stay in budget, you will have to go older. If you do not plan on going much out of town then a Fat Boy or Deluxe will do. Neither has bags or a windscreen. I love my Heritage, it come stock with bags and a windscreen, but they are easily removed if you like a cleaner look. As far as motors, they all work. My old 88 ran like a top and was so much cooler than my 96 or 103. Also, since you will just be local, the 5 or 6 speed does not matter. For the most part, get a bike you like when you find it. For what you are looking for, they are all good.
Since you want to compliment the bagger and use the 2nd bike for fun local rides, I'd get a dyna. Handles better and is lighter then a softail. They can be found for a lot less then softails which enables you to get a later model and do some nice things to it.
this one has a springer front end, and a lot of extras. $9600.
