Jayzee, yes it's safe to take it off. There are a few threads on here that discuss different methods, but the consensus seems to be...
1. Park the bike in the sun for a couple of hours or hit the film with a blow dryer for a few minutes, then slowly peel the plastic off. Clean up any remaining glue with WD40 or wax.
OR
2. Spray the edge with WD40 then start peeling and apply more as needed.
