Check out your path to this little two vehicle ( more if they're bikes! ) ferry that goes across the Cape Fear River. HWY 53 out of Fayetteville N.C. is a great way to get to the east side of the ferry access from Kelly. The western access road turns off of HWY 87 at a little crossroads known as Carvers.
The ferry location has a couple of picnic tables , plenty of shade and even a boat access ramp. Try and get down to see this little gem of a destination before state budget cuts close it down! http://www.gribblenation.com/ncpics/ferry/elwell.html

Rode to the Elwell Ferry this past weekend, but the ferry was not running. Does anyone know if it has been closed down due to budget cuts ? (In NC they like to spend our tax dollars on education not FOR kids but FOR the "overseeers" of education in their shrine in Raleigh). Hopefully it will be operational in the near future....
