The weather in the lower Smokies in October can be great, probably will be. We have lots of events and festivals in October and as often as not it's Indian Summer. It can rain, but I can only remember once or twice when it was cold.
Depending on when your son gets back, you may want to consider attending the Cherokee Survivors over the SMBW. http://cherokeerally.com/ The Survivors rally is a semi-annual blowout on the order of Little Sturgis. I've never been to SMBW, but if it's taking place at Fontana Village it will be G rated.
