We are going to be riding from Pennsylvania to California February 23-26, 2008.
I am trying to get a good idea of the weather on I40 in TX, NM, and AZ.
I did check out the Trip Planner at Weather Underground but I'd rather get real information/insight from the locals.
Your help is appreciated!
It can be brutally cold and windy through the panhandle of Texas that time of year but then again it can be shirtsleeves weather. Just depends on weather moving in from the northwest. Pretty much a crap shoot.
I live 19 miles south of 40 between Nashville and Memphis. That time of the year could goEXTREME both ways. I was in Flagstaff in May and it was cool in the mornings due to the elevation.
From Alb NM to Grants, Gallup, flagstaff It will be cold the roads are always clear . If you need a stop over in grants N M PM me your more then welcome Ride safe.
if your not in a hurry, it would be a good idea to take old route 66 from grants up to top of the world/continental divide. construction in that area is a pain in the butt.
we are riding from grants to vegas on thursday and plan on taking the old road as well...
I went to Nevada about that time a couple years ago to pick up a Camaro. It was in the teens through parts of Arizona and New Mexico. Never know when it will snow around Flagstaff. Hit about 6 inches of snow out of nowhere there once in early Oct.
You folks are confirming my suspicions about the weather.
If I had time, I would spend a good amount of time exploring AZ and NM using non-interstate roads. I have spent quit a bit of time there back when I was a military man and loved the mountains and the deserts.
I spend alot of time studying maps and writting down various routes of the southwest, daydreaming...and planning for the last two years.
This trip in February/March is going to be an ALL out mad runto SoCal...going toe-toe w/ the elements...and the clock.
On the way back, if the weather really takes a dump we'll just turn south and hit I10/I20/I59 and swing thru the deep south back up to PA
I moved from Dallas,TX to Vegas,NV 5 yrs ago. When I drove out in March I went down to El Paso to avoid snow in Gallup,NM, and another city in NM and Flaggstaff,AZ. Wasn't much out of the way for me, but its far from PA.
